Inland Fisheries Ireland statement on COVID-19 

Following the HSE and the Government’s advice in relation to  COVID-19, Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) has closed all offices. IFI staff are working from home.

At this time the only way to contact IFI is by email and telephone. Contact details are available at the Contact us tab. Office phones are diverted to staff who can deal with your query. Under the circumstances there may be delays in replying to your query.

IFI staff will respond to emergency calls as appropriate.

IFI has a 24 hour confidential hotline 1890 34 24 74 through which members of the public may report incidents of illegal fishing, water pollution and invasive species which will continue to operate.

The Government has published New public health measures announced for living with COVID-19: The Path Ahead

From 10th May 2021:

  • Anglers can travel outside of their county (inter-county travel)
  • Guiding and angling instruction can resume (personal services by appointment)
  • Angling training for adults can resume (outdoor training for adults in pods of a maximum of 15 people)
  • Organised outdoor gatherings with a maximum attendance of 15 people

Follow up-to-date Government advice, however changes to Government advice may result in amendments to this information. To stay safe, anglers should follow public health guidelines:

  • People may meet outdoors in groups of up to 15 people.
  • Adult and Underage anglers may train outdoors in pods of up to 15.
  • No competitions. Events may be able to resume from 07 June subject to public health situation at the time. IFI will update accordingly.

The Government has announced phased easing of public health restrictions. Since 12th April 2021, anglers can travel within their county or within 20km of their home if crossing county boundaries.

From 26th April Charter Fishing boats can resume angling under guidelines which limits the number of houshold on board to 2. Outdoor underage training can resume in pods of up to 15. 

The Government has published a medium-term strategy Resilience and Recovery 2020-2021: Plan for Living with COVID-19. Ireland is currently at Level 5.

At Level 5, the public health risk means that you will be asked to stay at home, except for travel for essential work, education or other essential purposes, or to take exercise within your county or up to 20km from home.

During level 5 restrictions, only essential workers can travel to work.

The Government has moved the entire country to Covid-19 Level 5 restrictions from 24th December 2020 until 12th January 2021. Travel restrictions mean anglers must stay in their own county.

Visiting international anglers should refer to government guidelines ‘Arriving to Ireland from another country’ for up-to-date advice.

Level 5 (with some adjustments) is in place from Christmas Eve

Level 5 restrictions apply to all counties from midnight on 24 December until 12 January 2021.

Special arrangements on travel and meeting with people are in place over the Christmas period. There are also some specific adjustments to level 5 restrictions.

The current restrictions on travel from Great Britain (England, Scotland or Wales) to Ireland will stay in place until at least 31 December. There are also additional requirements for travellers coming to Ireland from Britain who must self-isolate for 14 days.

Level 3 MEasures - 10/12/20

The Government has published a medium-term strategy Resilience and Recovery 2020-2021: Plan for Living with COVID-19. Ireland is currently at Level 3.

Inland Fisheries Ireland offers the following information to anglers as a guideline only. Government advice to stop the spread of coronavirus is BE RESPONSIBLE, BE SAFE.

The Government has moved the entire country to Covid-19 Level 3 restrictions, permitting the operation of non-essential business. Charter boats and angling guides may operate again while observing travel restrictions. Current travel restrictions mean anglers must stay in their own county, however, from 18th December 2020 to 6th January 2021 only, travel outside your county will be permitted.

Visiting international anglers should refer to government guidelines ‘Arriving to Ireland from another country’ for up-to-date advice.

Sporting events are permitted in Level 1 and Level 2 with restrictions. Competitions are NOT permitted at Levels 3-5. Inland Fisheries Ireland, in line with Government advice to reduce outdoor gatherings, will cease stocking of fish to counties currently in level four. Stocked fisheries attract larger numbers of anglers and groups and therefore present a risk.

Anglers are advised to comply with Government guidelines specific to the region in which they live and wish to travel to, see Current status of the Plan for Living with COVID-19.

Visiting international anglers should refer to government guidelines ‘Arriving to Ireland from another country’ for up-to-date advice.

Sporting events are permitted in Level 1 and Level 2 with restrictions. Updated Guidelines for Anglers

The Government has introduced measures to control the spread of COVID-19. Restrictions have been in place across Ireland since March 2020. The current measures that were announced on 18 August 2020 are in place until 13 September 2020.

A new ‘Roadmap for Resilience and Recovery’ will be published before 13 September 2020. This will set out how the Government plans to bring greater certainty to help people and businesses plan for the future.

Inland Fisheries Ireland offers the following information to anglers as a guideline only. Government advice to stop the spread of coronavirus is BE RESPONSIBLE, BE SAFE.

Anglers can now travel throughout the country without restrictions, apart from local lockdowns that may be in place. However, visiting international anglers should refer to government guidelines on ‘Arriving to Ireland from another country’ for up to date advice.

  • Indoor gatherings and events are now limited to 6 people from no more than 3 households.

  • Sporting events and matches can take place behind closed doors.

  • In situations where distancing is difficult, you are recommended to wear a face covering.

  • Park legally and responsibly if driving to outdoor amenities.

  • Respect our emergency services and avoid activities that could potentially lead to emergency call outs.

  • Travel separately, unless from the same household and visit outdoor areas at off peak times if possible.

  • It should be noted, any change to the over-arching ‘Roadmap for Reopening Society and Business’ may result in an amendment(s) to this page. Currently, we strongly advise the suspension of all angling competitions involving international competitors.

The Government has decided based on NPHET advice that the current public health measures will remain in place, the country will NOT be progressing to Phase 4 of the Roadmap to Reopening Society and Business until 31 August 2020 at the earliest. Guidelines for Anglers Updated - Covid-19

Inland Fisheries Ireland has updated its advice re angling to reflect the latest Government and NPHET advice.

As and from May 6th

  • anglers may fish in a location less than or equal to 5km from home

Open Fisheries

IFI owned/managed state fisheries are open and the Galway and Moy fisheries are re-opening on a pilot basis see here for more information.

ESB fisheries are now also open.

The status of private and club run fisheries is a matter for the fishery manager/committee.

Information regarding the purchase of permits and  salmon licences is available online at www.fishinginireland.info  .

Inland Fisheries Irelands will continue to monitor the situation and make further updates as appropriate in line the Governments Roadmap for reopening society and business.

Updated guidelines where travel to fish is permitted

  1. Fishing is permitted within 5km of your home

  2. Maintain social distancing at all times, especially at car parks, access points and launch sites.

  3. Anglers* should not share transport e.g. car/van when travelling to fish.

  4. Limit contact with other anglers and providers.

  5. Permit/licence sales online where possible

  6. Max. 2 persons* in small boat for inland/inshore fishing 

  7. Angling businesses may only open once classified as an essential service and should only operate if they can provide online/contactless services.

  8. Charter fishing or guided fishing may only operate where skippers/guides can guarantee compliance with social distancing measures.

  9. Recommend no competition fishing

  10. Facilities where anglers could gather to remain closed – lunch huts, etc.

  11. Where such facilities at 10 above are essential fishery should remain closed.

  12. Recommend anglers/guides/skippers to carry hand sanitiser and to use it after touching surfaces such as gates, stiles, pier railings, ladders, etc.

IFI angling guidelines that have been issued are to facilitate those that wish to take angling as their brief exercise while at all times following Government and HSE guidelines relating to social distancing.

IFI offers further clarification as follows:

  1. Fishing for a brief period means no more than an hour to an hour and a half

  2. Fish in a location less than or equal to 2km from your home

  3. Driving to fish is considered non-essential travel and therefore it is NOT APPROPRIATE for people to drive to a location whether within 2kms or further from home for the purpose of fishing.

  4. Fish only where you have permission to fish  - do not enter into private fisheries

  5. Use only legal methods

  6. Where you intend to fish club waters, check that they are open for fishing ( even if they are within 2km, they may not be open).

Anglers, angling clubs and fishery owners are advised to adhere to Government and HSE guidelines, to take normal safety precautions when fishing and in relation to Covid-19 should take the following into consideration:

  • Leaving home may only be undertaken for brief individual exercise - within 2 kilometres of your house. (You can bring children but must keep 2 metres away from others for social distancing).

  • Avoid crowded places

  • Reduce social interactions

  • Anglers should remain 2 metres apart (roughly one rod length) from each other and other members of the public

  • If applicable, anglers should check that the fishery is open in advance of fishing

  • Fish only if legally permitted to do so

  • Anglers need to be aware that they are in areas that are not routinely disinfected or cleaned and use all precautions to keep themselves and other safe from Covid19

Permits and licences are no longer for sale on-line. IFI approved distributors are recommended to not sell licences or permits on behalf of IFI at this time.

IFI office staff are now working from home. In the circumstances, there may be delays in replying to queries. Contact details are available at the Contact us tab. 

IFI field staff continue normal operations bearing in mind current HSE advice.

IFI staff may attend meetings remotely only (e-meetings, conference calls etc).

Those wishing to purchase licences or permits, pay bills or undertake other financial transactions with IFI are requested to do so online, via telephone, bank transfer or by post. 

IFI has a 24 hour confidential hotline through which members of the public may report incidents of illegal fishing, water pollution and invasive species which will continue to operate.

Following the HSE and the Government’s advice in relation to the delay of spread of COVID-19, Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) has taken the decision to stop the sale and delivery of trout from its fish farms in Roscrea and Mullingar until further notice.
